The Funeral Service National Board Examination (NBE) and State Board Examinations (SBE) were developed by and are maintained by The International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards ("The Conference"), a certifying organization which was founded in 1904 by delegates from several state licensing boards. In 1930, The Conference created the first National Board Examination. The last substantial overhaul of the NBE and SBE examinations was implemented in September 2012. The examinations' content outlines were revised based on the results of a task analysis survey conducted by The Conference in 2011.
